Rights being eroded

Our Natural Rights, that no government can take away, are described by John Locke below. Basically, this brilliant treatise can be amalgamated simply to the following:

Leave me and my stuff alone and I’ll do likewise to you.

“The state of nature has a law of nature to govern it, which obliges every one: and reason, which is that law, teaches all mankind, who will but consult it, that being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions… (and) when his own preservation comes not in competition, ought he, as much as he can, to preserve the rest of mankind, and may not, unless it be to do justice on an offender, take away, or impair the life, or what tends to the preservation of the life, the liberty, health, limb, or goods of another”. John Locke 1689

Today, the state is doing harm to our health with its constant wars and state dominated health care system.  In recent years, our liberty is being taken away in the erosion of our first Amendment rights. And, our possessions continue to be taken via a corrupt taxing system.

Does anyone but me feel similar to me that our natural rights are in very grave danger?  Please let me know your thoughts.

    The very term rights has evolved from the Lockean natural rights to the positive humanist sort. People talk, in apparent, sincerity, about a right to the Internet, to take a particularly silly example.

    Of course there can be no such right, first, because it’s lack was apparent throughout human history. And second, because its procurement requires the violation of someone else’s right, i.e. if Joe must have Internet, Jack must pay for it.

    Our pseudo-rights multiply endlessly, doing real harm to actual natural rights.

  2. pckrpnk, you have identified a major issue facing our ever growing Federal Government and its subjects. These pseudo-rights are growing exponentially. Now, everyone has an undisputed right to a $15/hr job, a right to food, housing and healthcare subsidies , free pre-K daycare and education, K-12 education, and soon to be 2-years of community college, and tuition free state colleges. Add in Safe zones, Internet, cell phones, and the granddaddy of them all, unfunded social security and medicare.

    Each of these are growing programs and to those who pay taxes, they are placed under the threat of jail to support these pseudo-rights. It is also a tragedy there is a destruction of the wealth and well being of future generations of Americans to support the Federal behemoth. We merely need to look back at past empires to see how the story ends.
